My New Year Resolution for 2011

Yes, I’m finally making a new year resolution. It’s not like I have never done this before, but to make it official, no. The success gurus will tell you only by making it official, you have greater chance of actually achieving it! So here I am making it official. Because I mean to achieve it!

First and foremost: Get back in shape.
Shame on me, this was supposed to be in my 2008 resolution (I had actually drafted the blog post titled “Dean Loh 2.0 In The Making” but never published it.)

Considering now that I have a baby boy, this is no longer an optional item but a must! I have about a year (or less) time to rebuild my stamina, so that when Jude starts to run around the shopping mall, I will be able to keep up with him.

Repositioning my brand. I started, and have been stuck as “freelance web designer” since 2006. I’m not complaining, but I have to agree to the setback: being recognized as “freelance web designer” somehow makes me look more like a “will build website for pizza”. After all, this is what most people in this region (particularly SINGAPOREANS) consider “freelance” as.

By repositioning my brand, I mean to move myself out of the “freelance camp”, not saying I will no longer be a freelance, rather, to dissociate it from the negative connotations such as “cheap”, “low quality work”, “unreliable”, etc.

Above all, continue to be a loving husband and father. And that’s about all!

If Life Can Be So Predictable…

… I would be so rich.

Seriously, if I knew I would enjoy so much doing what I’m doing now, at the same time paying my bills with it, I would have just started doing it a long time ago. Instead of going through all the wrong turns, trying at the wrong places, getting stuck with the wrong people, suffering the unwanted ordeal, and shit like that.

But then again, that’s just an idealistic thought. We all knew, we can’t have our life just the way we wanted it.

What About Web Design Rockstar?

As I was having dim sum supper with a friend the other night, a BMW 700 series zoomed by, she told me her insurance agent drives exactly the same car as that. She then went on and told me how reputable he is, how highly respected he is by his peers, as well as competitors, whenever people heard his name, people will not dare to touch his clients.

It then occurred to me: why isn’t or can’t there a web designer who shares such kind of glory? And I thought, if there isn’t anyone yet, how about I become one? I’ll become a web design rockstar. When people saw the websites built by me, they will not dare to think about touching it. It will be nice to be respected by my peers, as well as my competitors. I shall drive a nice car, maybe not 700 series, but an Audi R8 would be cool. Or a Volkswagen GLi. And whenever I drive my car by the dim sum shop, people will point at my car, and tell their friends that they know of a web designer who drives exactly a same car as that.

The Dog Has To Wait

How’s your new year? It’s another happening-less new year for me, yet again. When it was near midnight, I walked down to Joo Chiat Road, looked at people doing the countdown, chasing each other and spraying the spray-thing. Then I walked back in, made myself a cup of Milo, spread peanut butter on some breads, ate, watched some Youtubes, then slept. I can’t complain. Tina said it right, I “chose” to be lonely, so I shouldn’t complain.

The Making of the Next Ogilvy

I know, that’s quite a big statement (the title), but they say it is better to aim for the sky, and when you fall, you will fall on the stars. So, I hope to be the Ogilvy in Web Design. Not to be as creative as him, but to build up the agency as big as his.

According to expert, the first step in starting out your own business, is to have a very clear idea of “WHY”. More than half of businesses folded up within five years, some didn’t even make it through the second year, because they didn’t know why they started the business in the first place.

So, here I am going to do my part, in defining the “WHY”. And, as a matter of fact, I have always had my “WHY” at the back of my mind.

Here’s the first WHY…

A Whole New Chapter

2007 is finally here! I don’t know about the rest of you, but I had been waiting for it to come.

I have big plans for the new year, and the years to come. Saving up for buying a house, to get married, to set up my own consultancy firm are the three major things I’m going to accomplish this year.

I didn’t think about buying a house in Singapore until recently when my landlord decided to increase the rent of my room. The kind of money I pay for rent would be so enough to pay the mortgage of a small HDB flat here. It’s not like I didn’t know the math in the past 6 years, let’s just say, if the world was really up to us, I would be in Shanghai since a year ago.

My point is: up till last year, I didn’t think I would stay in Singapore for this long, but now, I think I do.

So big plans ahead, lots to do. Happy new year to you too!
